Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to the hazard of electrical shock and burns when
the inadvertent
contact was made with exposed electrical wiring/components above two
refrigeration units
located in the ship's galley. The following condition contributed to the
existence of this
hazard:
(a)M/V Blue Wave, in the ship's galley - Where two refrigerator units were
being repaired and the protective covers were removed exposing the
electrical
wiring/components, the employer failed to ensure that the protective covers
had been replaced during the time that servicing personnel were locating
parts
to complete the repair work.  Galley workers were subject to the
inadvertent
contact of the wiring and exposed to the hazard of electrical shock or
burns.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard would be to replace the protective covers.
