Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish employment
and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed
to falling loads:
A.Maintenance Shop:  The wire rope provided on the Yale half ton hoist had
excessive wear.
B.EDM:  The control buttons markings had worn off on the pedant control
for the Production Equipment
one ton underhung bridge crane.
C.Steel Yard:  The wire rope provided on the P&H Heavilift overhead crane
had excessive wear.  Also,
the hoist was not provided with an operable upper limit switch.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct
this hazard is to:
1.Conduct monthly, documented wire rope inspections.
2.Conduct thorough annual inspections of all cranes and hoists.
3.Perform all necessary preventative maintenance and repair any unsafe
crane/hoist components as they
are observed.
