Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards while lifting and transporting a mold to the DISA (Core/Mold) machine: In the Core Department an employee was using a spreader bar with four chains and hooks, an under the hook device, in conjunction with an overhead hoist to lift a mold on the table of a DISA, Core Machine, and was exposed to a falling mold and struck-by hazard due to the unknown rated load capacity and lack of a periodic inspection on the spreader bar. Among other methods, once feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the guidelines in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) B30.20-2006, Section 20-1.2.1 wherein it specifies that below the hook lifting devices must be capable of lifting loads within its rated load capacity, which must be marked so as to inform the user to prevent overloading and failure of the device. The employer can also determine during the periodic inspection of these devices that the rated load capacity is marked and used within its rated load capacity on specified loads.ied
