The guarding device shall be in conformity with any appropriate standards therefor, or, in the absence of applicable specific standards, shall be so designed and constructed as to prevent the operator from having any part of his body in the danger zone during the operating cycle. a) On or about February 2, 2012 and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed an amputation hazard while operating the Irvington swing saws without adequate point of operation guarding.

29 CFR 1910.219(f)(3): Sprockets and chains. All sprocket wheels and chains shall be enclosed unless they are more than seven (7) feet above the floor or platform. Where the drive extends over other machine or working areas, protection against falling shall be provided.This subparagraph does not apply to manually operated sprockets. a) On or about February 2, 2012 and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to an amputation hazard while working around and near the unguarded chain and sprocket on N bar machine.

29 CFR 1910.243(c)(3): Vertical portable grinders. Safety guards used on machines known as right angle head or vertical portable grinders did not have a maximum exposure angle of 180 deg., and the guard was not located so as to be between the operator and the wheel during use. Adjustment of guard shall be such that pieces of an accidentally broken wheel will be deflected away from the operator. (See Figure P-4.) a) On or about February 2, 2012 and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to flying parts of the grinding wheel while operating the SKILL right angle grinder without the guard in place.
