29 CFR 1910.1000(a)(2): Employee(s) were exposed to an airborne concentration of Copper Fume, listed in Table Z-1 in excess of the 8 hour Time Weighted Average concentration of 0.1 milligrams per cubic meter of air (mg/m3): a). On or about November 10, 2016, a vertical casting operator working on the vertical caster was exposed to copper fume at an 8 hour time weighted average level of 0.118 mg/m3, this exposure was approximately 1.18 times the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 0.1mg/m3. This exposure was calculated from a sample collected over a 388 minute period; a zero increment was included for the 92 minutes not sampled. b). On or about November 10, 2016, a vertical casting operator working on the vertical caster was exposed to copper fume at an 8 hour time weighted average level of 0.188 mg/m3, this exposure was approximately 1.88 times the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 0.1mg/m3. This exposure was calculated from a sample collected over a 396 minute period; a zero increment was included for the 84 minutes not sampled. Spectrum Machine, Inc., was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard, which was contained in OSHA inspection number 992388, citation number 2, item number 1a and was affirmed as a final order on 1/12/2015, with respect to the workplace at this location.

29 CFR 1910.1000(e): Feasible administrative or engineering controls were not determined and implemented to achieve compliance with the limits prescribed in 29 CFR 1910.1000(a) through (d): Engineering controls were not implemented to reduce the exposure to employees overexposed to Copper Fume. Engineering controls usually effective in these circumstances include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Modification of the existing ventilation system to improve capture of air contaminants at the ventilation hoods. 2. Modification of ventilation hoods to better collect metal fumes. 3. Installation of exhaust hoods over the buckets used to collect slag. a).
