29 CFR 1910.1000(d)(2)(i): Employees were exposed to a nickel, cobalt, and chromium metal mixture in excess of the cumulative exposure limit: Rotofile Area: On or about October 26, 2024, and some time thereafter, employees were exposed in excess of the cumulative exposure limit to a nickel, cobalt, and chromium metal mixture in the following instances: a) The violation was observed when an employee was exposed in excess of the cumulative exposure limit during rotofile operations where die grinders and orbital sanders were used to pre-finish aerospace metal alloy castings that contained a mixture of nickel, cobalt, and chromium metals. An employee was exposed to nickel metal at concentrations of 0.695 milligrams per cubic meter of air (mg/m3), cobalt metal at concentrations of 0.071 mg/m3, and chromium metal at 0.236 mg/m3 as an eight-hour time-weighted average (8-hr TWA) during a sample period of 297 minutes, using zero exposure for the unsampled portion of the 8-hour shift. With an equivalent exposure for the mixture of 1.64 and a mixture control limit of 1.07, it confirmed that an overexposure had occurred within 95% confidence limits. b) The violation was observed when an employee was exposed in excess of the cumulative exposure limit during gate grinding operations where carbide grinders and orbital sanders were used to pre-finish aerospace metal alloy parts that contained a mixture of nickel, cobalt, and chromium metals. An employee was exposed to nickel metal at concentrations of 0.477 milligrams per cubic meter of air (mg/m3), cobalt metal at concentrations of 0.055 mg/m3, and chromium metal at 0.160 mg/m3 as an eight-hour time-weighted average (8-hr TWA) during a sample period of 375 minutes, using zero exposure for the unsampled portion of the 8-hour shift. With an equivalent exposure for the mixture of 1.19 and a mixture control limit of 1.07, it confirmed that an overexposure had occurred within 95% confidence limits.
