Before the incident
Immediately prior to the incident the employee was attempting to open a box of hubs
What happened
The employee was holding the box with his left hand and holding a pair of opened scissors in his (ungloved) right hand. As the employee completed the box seam cut his right hand continued on in the same direction as the cut until it contacted the bit on the drill. The momentum caused the bit to penetrate the palm area below the thumb (Thenar region). While receiving first aid the employee stated that the bit penetrated approximately one-quarter of an inch into the palm.
