Metal containers and portable tanks meeting the requirements of and containing products authorized by chapter I, title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (regulations issued by the Hazardous Materials Regulations Board, Department of Transportation), shall be deemed to be acceptable. Facility: Employees used and stored Category 1 flammable liquids in plastic containers. The employers had not used approved containers such as metal safety cans to hold Category 1 flammable liquids. Employees were exposed to burn hazards.

The employees were exposed to eye irritants.

29 CFR 1910.151(c): The employer did not ensure where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body shall be provided within the work area for immediate emergency use. Reference: ANSI Z358.1 Emergency Eyewash and Shower Standard 5.4.4 The eyewash unit shall be located on the same level as the hazard and the path of travel shall be free of obstructions that may inhibit the immediate use of the equipment. Maintenance and Cleaning Operations: Employees were handling corrosive chemical materials such as Category 1 SNB-130 disinfectant, Clorox Bleach, Reliance HD Degreaser, and Muriatic Acid where an emergency eye wash station in close proximity for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes was not kept free of clutter and debris within the eyewash area for immediate emergency use. Employees were exposed to severe eye burns or blindness.

29 CFR 1910.1200(h)(1):Employees were not provided effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in their work area at the time of their initial assignment and whenever a new hazard that the employees had not been previously trained about was introduced into their work area: Facility: Employees used Category 1 corrosive chemicals such as SNB-130 disinfectant, Clorox Bleach, Reliance HD Degreaser, and Muriatic Acid during cleaning and maintenance operations. The employer had not provided training specific to the health and safety hazards associated with these chemicals at the time of introduction and assignment of tasks. Employees were exposed to dermal and eye hazards.
