Employee was moving a beam from a storage rack

Two- night shift maintenance shop employees were working together to salvage material from the storage shed which is being slated for demolition. This building had the electrical service shut off and the employees were using a forklift to light the area where they were working. After removing several pieces of steel they decided to take a beam off the storage rack which was 70 inches high and place it on the floor so a future determination can be made on where to store it. This hollow beam is 9”X 4” and 8 foot long. Normally an electric gantry hoist would be used to handle materials in this area. Since the power was shut off the employees decided to manually lift the material. Each employee tested the load by picking up an end and thought that they could handle the weight. The employees removed the beam from the rack and started to lower it when the beam shifted.
