Cutting scrap

On [REDACTED] at approximately [REDACTED] an employee operating the stock length saw was cutting a 289” starter billet for scrap. Following standard protocol the operator cuts the extrusion in half and then drags the cut piece back to the saw to cut each half again into 6’ lengths. This method is used to reduce the number of cuts from 3 to 2 improving efficiency. As the operator drug the cut extrusion back to the saw his hand was positioned on the end of the extrusion. Because the extrusion was flimsy the operator’s hand fell below the grade of the roller conveyor. His hand struck the plastic roller of the roller conveyor while the extrusion continued to travel in the direction of the operator’s hand. The force of the extrusion ripped open the top side of the employee’s left ring finger knuckle creating a deep laceration. The laceration was on the side of the finger in contact with the roller.
